Limpia (Spirtual Cleansing) in Teotitlán

Approximately 15 minute duration

Cost per person: $20 USD/375 MXN

  • A spiritual cleansing performed by a healer by rubbing selected herbs on your head, neck, arms, and legs (you are fully clothed during the ceremony) in combination with rubbing alcohol or traditional mezcal to release the properties of the herbs. Afterwards the healer rubs an egg over you to extract stress or bad energy. This experience is a good fit for those who want to learn about traditional medicine and its everyday uses. 

*This experience can be added on to a Teotitlán Traditional Cooking Class, Teotitlán Chocolate Making Workshop, or Teotitlán Natural Dyes & Weaving Workshop (we do not offer this experience on its own).

Join us for a traditional steam bath temezcal in the home of our community partners. We will learn about the history and tradition of this practice as a form of preventative medicine in the community to combat fatigue, stress, and bad sleep. The women of Teotitlán have been using this steam bath as a way to heal and gather for centuries. We will participate in a spirirtual cleansing or limpia, a Zapotec massage, and an hour long session in the temezcal followed by a nourishing meal.

  • Learn about traditional healing practices in the community from our hosts, learning about the plants used and practices preformed for thing like ojo and sustso

  • Traditional Zapotec massage (performed while clothed, 15-20 minute duration)

  • One hour steam bath in the temezcal, rest and acclimate

  • Option to learn about weaving and natural dyes while we rest

*A bathing suit, sandals, and a change of warm comfortable clothing for after the steam bath are all recommended for this experience.

Santa Catarina Minas

Healing with Mezcal in Minas  

Schedule: 9am-5pm

  • Comfortable transportation round trip from Oaxaca city (1 hour each way)

  • Big breakfast at our favorite roadside comedor where everything is cooked on a woodfire

  • Visit to the agave garden and palenque of our community partners at Real Minero mezcal

    • Tour of Proyecto LAM, an agave garden and nursery where we will learn about the agaves and wood used in mezcal production as well as medicinal herbs used for healing mezcals. The Angeles Carreño family has been making mezcal since 1898 and has a sustainability plan that carries them through the next 100 years of their family´s production. Working with 22 diferent types of agaves, we will learn about their work in conserving agaves that are native to Oaxaca, their commitment to organic practices and agroforestry, as well as the creation of the world´s first community agave seed bank.

    • Tour of the Real Minero palenque, where the family produces small batch mezcal using traditional methods including natural fermentaion. We learn about the unique techniques used in Santa Catarina Minas such as distilling in double clay pot stills

  • Participate in a limpia or spiritual cleansing using Real Minero mezcal and medicinal herbs grown in the Proyecto LAM garden

  • Learn about the different herbs used in combination with mezcal for different spirtual and physical ailments such a bad dreams, susto, or migranes. We learn about the history of the mezcallieras in the community who where the grandmothers who knew which herbs to use for what ailments. We have the chance to try mezcals infused with herbs for healing purposes such as rue, rosemary, or vaporrub (menthol)

  • Sit down tasting of Minero mezcal made on site. Each person will get to try 4 unique mezcals, learning how to taste and identify a traditional mezcal

  • A chance to purchase mezcal directly from Real Minero (price not included), many batches which are only available for purchase in Mexico. Our help packing it for travel

  • Farm to table lunch at the Real Minero palenque
